Edwin Evans, church warden and grave-digger.
St Cynwyd's church, Llangynwyd, Maesteg.
Apparently Edwin Evans was a character and it seemed so when I met him in the church grounds. He generated a little extra income by recounting the tale of Ann Thomas the 'Maid of Cefn Yddfa'.
Legend states that Anne Thomas had fallen in love with a poet, Wil Hopcyn. She was however forced to marry another man when the relationship with Wil Hopcyn was discovered. She pined desperately for her lover who had left the area, and became seriously ill.
On her deathbed she asked to see Wil Hopkyn and when he arrived she died in his arms.
Edwin Evans would gather the visitors around the church register and indicate the entry, showing that Anne Maddocks died in 1727 and was buried in St Cynwyd's Church, Llangynwyd.
